The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is now accepting applications for the 2025 AKS Graduate Fellowship, a fully funded research opportunity in South Korea. This prestigious non-degree program invites international scholars pursuing master’s or doctoral research related to Korea to spend six months at the Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS) in Seongnam, South Korea.

Fellowship Duration

Eligible Nationalities
This fellowship is open to applicants of all nationalities.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be non-Korean citizens or overseas Koreans who completed education abroad
- Be currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program at a non-Korean university, or have completed coursework for a master’s degree (ABD status allowed only for master’s programs)
- Have a research topic related to Korean studies
- Demonstrate Korean or English language proficiency (preferred but not mandatory)
Note: Past AKS Graduate Fellows are not eligible to reapply.

Required Documents
Applicants must submit:
- Online application form
- Personal statement
- Research proposal (approx. 3 pages)
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degree transcripts and certificates
- Letter of recommendation from an academic advisor
- Passport copy and recent ID photo
- Language proficiency certificates (if available)
- Proof of doctoral enrollment (if applicable)
All documents must be in English or Korean. Translations must be notarized if originally in another language.
Obligations for Fellows
- Enroll in at least one academic course or design an independent study
- Designate and collaborate with a faculty advisor
- Stay in Korea for the entire fellowship duration
- Submit a final research report or thesis (minimum 5,000 words in English)
- Present research findings at a scheduled seminar
- Submit a Certificate of Entry & Exit before departure
Violations of program rules may result in cancellation of funding and reimbursement obligations.
