How to Change Careers Part 1

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

This video begins a series I’m going to do about changing careers and how to go about doing it. (from the archives)

Reinventing Your Career: Expert Advice for a Successful Transition

Changing careers is often one of the most difficult things a person has to decide to do. You’ve spent time working in one profession. Perhaps you’ve been a business owner and you’ve now decided to go back to corporate, worked in corporate, you’re now going out and starting a business or you want to just get a job in a completely unrelated field but you don’t know quite what to do and that’s a pretty common scenario for job changers or I should say career changers.

So, I’m beginning a series where I’m going to talk with you about steps that you can take as a career changer to start the exploration process. Now, I want to be clear. If you think this is going to be an instant uh-huh process, that’s not how I’m going to lead this.

The way you need to go through this is with care, with time, with concern. So, I want you to understand this going into this process because if you’re not prepared to do this, then you’re likely to wind up barking up one wrong tree after another until you find the right one. If that’s what you want to do, you don’t need this video.

But where we’re going to go in this process is looking at a number of different steps to take that hopefully you can stare at and help evaluate and assess potential opportunities and possibilities to eliminate ones that don’t fit and stick with ones that do. So, let me just look at it from the standpoint of being a child. You know, my son has been looking at a career in the medical profession for the longest time and recently has come to realize the amount of effort that’s going to go into becoming the type of specialist that he’s interested in becoming or he said he was interested in becoming and, as a result, his aspirations have scared us been rolled back pretty profoundly.

Career Reinvention

And I’ll just simply say for a lot of job hunters, for a lot of career changers, it’s much the same thing. For the job changer, it’s the, oh, I really want to be a . . . I’ll use an example out of out of the blue . . . a quantitative analyst on wall street. They make a lot of money and that’s really as much as they know and then when they start to look at it, they start to say, that sounds pretty boring and it’s not for them.

So, here’s where we start today. I want you to start sitting down with yourself and creating an enormous list of what your strengths are. You may think of yourself as being one way and I want you to ask those around you also some of the things they see you as being particularly good at.

Are you empathetic to people? Are you a great listener? Are you a terrific speaker? Are you great in front of a camera? Like the sun effect as I move there. Are you good in front of a camera? What do you like there as an individual and what are you really strong at doing, particularly those things that you like? It can be things that you think are dumb. Just no filtering here.

If you like watching sports on TV, that goes on the list. If you like playing tennis, that goes on the list. Anything goes on this list for now.

Make it long. Make it comprehensive. Take time with it.

This is not five minutes and you’re done. I want you really thinking about it. I like making dinner for my family.

I like going to church, synagogue, the mosque, the meditation center, whatever it is, this goes on the list. Every last item. So, that’s where we’re going to start and I’ll be back soon with more.

Have a great day!
