Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) Alum and Campus Advisor Alyin Diaz is dedicated to helping fellow Denver Public Schools (DPS) graduates navigate their educational journeys and plan their futures. A proud graduate of North High School and the University of Colorado Denver—where she earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees—Alyssa now gives back to the community that supported her by working directly with DSF Scholars at her alma mater as a DSF Campus Advisor.

Throughout her academic and professional journey, Alyssa was mentored by individuals like DSF Re-engagement Manager Anitra Montoya, her longtime mentor and now DSF colleague. “When I think of Alyssa and other students, they taught me during my professional career the meaning of true connections, and staying true to your word, and the lasting impact on student’s lives,” said Anitra “Alyssa and I often reminisce about the early days of my career and her education and how it all ended up that we are colleagues at DSF, and how she is continuing her legacy of helping students find their way to complete their college degree. I am so proud to see how much Alyssa has accomplished and her special touch she has had with students!”
Alyssa’s involvement with DSF began early after college graduation, attending events such as the DSF Graduation Celebration and later serving on the DSF Alumni Advisory Committee. Passionate about student success, she explored various roles, including working with special needs students and in college admissions. However, her true calling was supporting students directly, hand in hand. In November 2021, she fulfilled her dream by joining DSF as a Campus Advisor at CU Denver, her alma mater.
Alyssa’s educational journey was shaped by her participation in DPS programs, including pre-collegiate initiatives starting in middle school. She took part in Talent Search, a grant-funded program, and visited colleges during field trips. As a first-generation student, she initially believed college was out of reach, thinking cosmetology school was her only option. However, with the guidance of the DSF Future Center at North High School and her counselor, she applied for college and scholarships, eventually enrolling at CU Denver. Through dual enrollment, financial aid, and the DSF Scholarship, Alyssa successfully transitioned into higher education. Now, she is committed to helping other DSF Scholars do the same.

For Alyssathe most rewarding aspect of her work is seeing students graduate and achieve their goals. “This year, I will see my third from college—students who started as freshmen and are now completing their degrees. I hope to see the impact I had on them,” said Alyssa. “My journey mirrors theirs, and my goal has always been to serve students like me.”
Her advice to DSF Scholars is powerful: Lean on DSF and utilize your resources, especially your DSF Campus Advisors. We are here to help—not only to answer questions but to guide you toward your goal of graduating college and making the process easier.

Alyssa’s Diaz Family
Alyssa’s dedication to DSF extends beyond her career—it is a family legacy. Her husband, Matt Diaz, is also a DSF Alum. Like Alyssa, he attended North High School and graduated from the University of Colorado Denver with a degree in Human Resources and Business Management. With over ten years of experience in finance, management, and entrepreneurship—including his own magic business—Matt remains actively involved with DSF. In 2023, he served as a speaker at DSF Scholar Summit, sharing his journey with students, particularly with male students of color who could relate to his experiences. He has also served as DSF’s mascot Future at various events. “DSF is a true blessing. Having a network within the DSF community is critical to student success. DSF not only provides financial support but also fosters a lifelong community that encourages career success and alumni giving back,” said Matt.
Alyssa and Matt’s collective and individual stories exemplify the power of community, perseverance, and giving back. Their connection to DSF has shaped their lives, and now, they continue to pay it forward—not just to current and future DSF Scholars but also to their own children, who will one day be part of the DSF family. Their journey proves that the impact of DSF extends far beyond college graduation, shaping futures for generations to come.
