A LinkedIn editor asked, “Job seekers are often told to not sell themselves short when negotiating their salary, but doing so is easier said than done. Everything from how they make the ask to if they share their target number can impact the offer. How can people ensure they don’t leave money on the table?”

I replied:
Companies are negotiating from the first time the screener asks, “So, what are you looking for in the way of base salary?” I coach people to deflect and defer.
“All I know about the job is what I’ve read in the job (ad or description) or heard from Rhona or Ronnie Recruiter, which most people say is 80% accurate at best. I haven’t met with my future manager, gotten a sense of their expectations or even their definition of the role, haven’t met with any of my future colleagues, let alone have an understanding of the institutional friction that exists. I can tell you a salary now, but frankly, I may come back to you later with a different salary expectation after I’ve spoken with everyone. Can we circle back to that later?”
