The events of the past two years have shown that even massively profitable companies are willing to fund stock buybacks through layoffs, regardless of the human toll. No matter how financially successful a corporation appears, you can’t count on them for stable employment anymore. The only thing you can rely on is your professional network.
If your company has gone through recent layoffs, activating your network is crucial – both for your future prospects and for supporting your former colleagues. If you were fortunate enough to keep your jobdon’t just breathe a sigh of relief. Reach out to those who were let go. Call them, send them a kind message, and let them know you’re available to provide references, make introductions, or assist their job search in any way you can.
At the same time, reactivate connections within your broader professional circle. Let people know you have talented friends seeking new roles. Offer to share their resumes and success stories. The people you build strong bonds with today could be instrumental in helping you find your next position when the tables inevitably turn again.
If you were among those laid off, resist any feelings of shame or embarrassment. This is part of the new corporate cycle, driven by factors outside your control. Speak up and ask your remaining colleagues for their support. An introduction or recommendation from someone who can vouch for your skills and work ethic could make all the difference in landing your next opportunity.
In today’s unpredictable environment, the people you nurture relationships with are your true long-term support system. Five years from now, you’ll be thankful you took the time to build those human connections. Because no matter how many billions corporations are making, stable employment is an outdated concept. An activated network you can rely on through the inevitable ups and downs is invaluable.
