People have a silly idea of who decides their value when looking for a job. This is the brutal truth.
“The only people who define the market for what it is you do is the market. Not your friends, not your well-meaning, you know, former colleagues, not your wife, husband, or partner. The market does.
If you’ve been out of work for a while, if you’ve gotten multiple rejections, no responses to your resume, that’s the market talking to you, and you may not like what it has to say. And at times, it’s going to try and grind you to a lower salary because, frankly, it’s trying to get the most from people at the lowest possible price.
So, I just want to say, the market defines your value, not you. You decide what it is you’re willing to accept, but you may have to make a tough decision about accepting less than what you really want.
Why?
Because the market doesn’t think you’re worth it. And I know you don’t like hearing this stuff, and I’m probably going to get a lot of criticism for it, but the reality is, the market defines your value. After all, if you’ve been out of work for a couple of weeks, how much does that cost you in lost wages?
Get back to work more quickly, it’ll serve you.
