You Snooze. You Lose | No BS HIring Advice

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Labor shortages abound in many fields and you and your managers dilly-dally (I love that phrase) through interviews and wonder why you are losing people

Hiring The Right People

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m the head coach for JobSearch.Community. You know, the economic times are really good and a lot of hiring is going on. I just saw a jobs report that was wonderful and I keep hearing stories from people that I coach, from friends of mine, about getting multiple offers from different firms and reminds me of an expression that I used to hear a lot when I worked in recruiting and we would tell applicants that if they procrastinated and going in interviews, they might lose out on an opportunity and the phrase was, you snooze, you lose.

And for you as an employer right now, the longer you delay your interview process, the less likely you’re going to be able to get the talent that you want. I’ll give you an example from someone I’ve been working with who wound up with seven or eight interviews, three offers. She was about to get a fourth and a fifth and just decided to pull the plug because she had to make a decision and firms were not ready to complete their interview processes in time.

Now, three offers with more coming. She knew that some of these offers were going to come next week and she had to make a decision this week or lose her first choice. I’ll simply say, folks, if you’re in the hiring business, if you’re recruiting talent to your organization as either an HR professional or as a hiring manager, you snooze, you lose.

Competitive Forces: How They Shape Strategy

You lose the opportunity and I’ve got to tell you when you lose the opportunity to get someone, it is a huge disappointment. Like, I just helped to reply back to an employer that had made her an offer and she politely told them she had already chosen something else and it’s like a boyfriend or a girlfriend who’s been broken up with. It’s one of those kind of . . . but you told me that and she meant it very sincerely.

She liked the opportunity there and she liked a different one even more and it was a great job and that’s where she’s going to. Folks, every job applicant that you meet with, you’ve got to be selling to you’ve got to move more quickly on and I know sometimes your schedule makes it hard but you’ve got to do it or you lose some of these potential hires and then you’ve got to face your staff going, sorry, they took another job. We’re still looking for someone and we’ve got tight times for labor because for many organizations, you know, white collar labor hasn’t really entered the workforce in sufficient numbers to satisfy all the jobs that are being filled that need to be filled.

So, you’ve got to move faster. You’ve got to get better at your evaluation process and do it quicker. Do it quicker because you will lose if you snooze.
